Today I spent Day 200 doing what I’ve been doing since the beginning of this blog: road tripping to the beach. It may be the middle of winter, we may be experiencing a weather front so cold it’s called the “Antarctic Vortex”, but screw it, the sun was out and I had a whole day free. The beach was calling me. And as you can see from the pics, the Antarctic Vortex was nowhere to be found. It was beautiful. Good decision, me.
Also, today I wore tights as pants for the first time. And thus took another step towards resembling an actual girl. One of those times where I can hardly recognise myself in the mirror. But of course, that’s the whole point. And Jesus, that shit is comfortable as hell. Now I know why girls wear them. Sign me up!
So as I say, day at the beach. There is nothing quite like walking around in thongs, putting your feet in the surf, eating lunch on the beach in the middle of winter. Straya. And to top it all off I was blasting Spotify and listening to a bunch of new tunes. In the words of Ice Cube, today was a good day.
Speaking of rap, I had heard of Dej Loaf but never listened to her until now. Girl rapping is always a win. I may have to check out Tame Impala‘s new album, because I listened to “The Less I Know The Better” and fell in love with it a little bit. The way it opens with (I think):
“Someone said they were together
I ran out the door to get her
She was holding hands with Trevor
Not the greatest feeling ever”
I mean wow. “Not the greatest feeling ever” is the most outstanding lyric I’ve ever heard. That shit is real.
Elsewhere, I heard a new Bring Me The Horizon song, and I had this total Avenged Sevenfold moment of “When did they stop playing metal and become a rock band??” My memory of BMTH is of songs like “Sleepwalking” and being the screamy-metalcore-band-that-girls-love du jour back in 2013 when I went to my first Soundwave. But now I hear this, I think it was called “Happy Song”, and it’s something that could be the WWE Raw theme song, way more straight up hard rock. So Bring Me The Horizon have done an Avenged Sevenfold. I need to be informed about these things!
What impressed me the most, however, was a song called “New Americana” by Halsey. I’ve never even heard of this bird before, but she kind of sounds like a non-manic depressed Lana Del Rey. Anyway she reps Biggie in the song, and then you get to the breakdown and she slides into “We know very well, who we are…” and I popped huge because she was doing “Juicy”, but she used the melody to turn it into something else and I popped even harder, because she had the swag to like rep the song but not just recite it, and instead made it into her own original thing, but using the melody of the hook to evoke “Juicy” all the while. This blew me away so much I gasped and had my hand over my mouth for like a minute in the middle of traffic. Knocked me down. I love this and I am definitely going to check out her album when it drops.
The last new thing I should mention about today is that when I started this blog, I made a promise to myself that when I reached 100 followers (thank you, by the way) I would get a real domain name as a reward and try to be a bit more professional about this. And in a nice coincidence, I reached that milestone this week so here on Day 200, I finally have a proper address – theyearofsomethingnew.com. Professionalism to follow.
